Director of Orchestras and Associate Director of Bands
Travis Almany is the Director of Orchestras and Associate Director of Bands at Texas A&M University. In this role, he is the conductor of the University Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra, and Symphonic Winds. He also serves as an assistant with the University Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band and Concert Band. He has also served as Associate Director of the nationally famous “Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band.” In addition to his conducting and rehearsal duties, Mr. Almany is responsible for recruiting, auditions and administrative duties of the orchestras and bands. Mr. Almany has been honored with the “Award of Distinction” by the Texas A&M University Division of Student Affairs.
Mr. Almany is a graduate of Lindale High school where he played in his father’s band. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Instrumental Music Education from Stephen F. Austin State University, where his principal studies were with John Whitwell and Dr. Charles Gavin. Mr. Almany graduated from SFA as the Lenville Martin outstanding music graduate. He earned his Master of Music Education in Instrumental Conducting degree from the University of Illinois, where he was a fellowship student of Jim Keene and Mark Moore.
Prior to his appointment at Texas A&M, Mr. Almany taught at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale where he was the marching band director and tuba/euphonium instructor, and at Lamar University where he was the Assistant Director of Bands. He also taught in the Texas public schools at Watauga Middle School, Georgetown High School, Lindale High School and Silsbee High School. His public school bands consistently received 1st divisions at UIL contests and his students achieved many individual honors.
Mr. Almany is active as a clinician, conductor and adjudicator througout the state. He has conducted and presented clinics at the TMEA clinic in San Antonio, various school consortiums, and individual schools. He regularly serves as a conductor with all-region and other honor ensembles. Mr. Almany has served as adjudicator for numerous UIL, invitational band contests, and festivals. As a euphonium soloist he has performed with the Texas A&M Wind Symphony, the Lamar University Symphonic Band, the Southern Illinois University Wind Ensemble, and several high school bands. Mr. Almany was honored to be chosen as one of only four SFA graduate soloists to open SFA’s new music recital hall.
Mr. Almany’s professional memberships have included Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Orchestra Directors Association, Texas Music Educators Association, College Music Society, National Association of Military Marching Bands, Tubist Universal Brotherhood Association, Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Mu Alpha and honorary memberships in Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma.
Travis is married to Becky Almany who teaches English at Blinn College.
