Dr. James Van Zandt is in his first year as Director of Orchestras here at Texas A&M University. He hopes to provide important and meaningful musical experiences to his students along their academic journey. Dr. Van Zandt received his bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Texas at Austin in 1997, his master's degree in Wind Conducting from the University of Michigan in 2003, then returning to the University of Texas at Austin to receive his Doctorate in Trombone Performance in 2018.
Prior to his current position, Dr. Van Zandt served as both Professor of Trombone and Director of Orchestra at Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX. During his tenure, he inspired and guided countless students, fostering their musical growth and nurturing their passion for orchestral performance. He served as a trombonist in the United States Air Force Band in Washington, DC, the San Antonio Opera, and the Central Texas Philharmonic.
In addition to his educational pursuits, Dr. Van Zandt's dedication to music extends to the Texas Army National Guard, where he currently serves as a non-commissioned officer, principal trombonist, and assistant conductor of the 36th Infantry Division Band.
His commitment to both education and service exemplifies his profound impact on the world ofworld of music making him asset to the Texas A&M University community and the broader musical landscape.
